Tensile membrane structures
Tensile membrane structures
Weather Protection’s perforated tensile membranes provide an advanced architectural solution for shading and the enhancement of residential, commercial and hospitality spaces. Combining structural performance with contemporary design, they offer effective solar protection while preserving natural airflow, filtered daylight and a visual connection with the surrounding environment.
What are perforated tensile membranes?
Tensile membrane structures use carefully engineered tension to create lightweight, three-dimensional architectural forms. The membrane is precisely tensioned between designated support and anchoring points, producing distinctive curved geometries that combine functionality with a strong visual identity.
Unlike solid membranes, perforated systems are typically manufactured from open-weave, high-density polyethylene (HDPE). Their breathable construction allows air and filtered light to pass through while helping to reduce solar heat gain, glare and exposure to UV radiation.
Key features and benefits
- Natural ventilation and improved thermal comfort: The open-weave structure allows warm air to escape, limiting the build-up of heat beneath the canopy and creating a more comfortable outdoor environment.
- Solar control and UV protection: Perforated tensile membranes reduce glare and can filter up to 95–98% of harmful UV radiation, depending on the selected fabric, colour and mesh density.
- Visual connection with the surroundings: The semi-transparent structure maintains an open-air character and outward visibility while also providing a degree of visual privacy.
- Reduced wind pressure: The permeability of the fabric allows part of the airflow to pass through the membrane, reducing wind pressure compared with a fully solid surface. Every structure is designed according to the specific location, dimensions and environmental conditions of the project.
- Architectural flexibility: Custom design options allow tensile membranes to form distinctive geometric configurations that complement the architecture of a building and enhance the identity of its surrounding space.
Materials and durability
Weather Protection selects high-performance architectural fabrics designed for long-term use in demanding outdoor environments. Depending on the selected membrane and the requirements of the project, available properties may include UV stabilisation, anti-wicking and anti-fungal treatments, protective surface coatings that facilitate cleaning, and fire-retardant options certified in accordance with relevant European standards.
Each tensile membrane structure is individually designed to respond to the functional, architectural and environmental requirements of its setting.
